Torching Trees & Heated Public Meetings

Wildfire in the Bitterroot Valley, MT Although the fire puts on a hell of a show at night (see photos) and is obscured by smoke in the day, the amount of stand replacing fire appears to comprise little of the visible front country.  I’m really looking forward to the changes in that landscape over the next 5 years.  I’m going to be swimmin’ in morels, black-backed woodpeckers, and more!   Went to USFS public info meeting.  Very heated stuff.  Lots of fearful and passionate conspiracy theorists with very little understanding of the complexity of fire.  People honestly think that the USFS is either 1) deliberately doing nothing, 2) are “just in it for the money”, 3) that they actually SET this fire, or 4) they’re just taking orders from that “muslim, left-wing liberal” in DC.  Compelled to stand up for the other side, I got myself interviewed for the radio and for a local television station.  Although I haven’t owned a TV in 15 years, I did see that one small segment of my rant made it to TV.  I’ve already received emails from USFS staff thanking me for my comments.  You can see the silly TV clip here: http://www.keci.com/pages/4000289.php?channelIndex=0&mediaIndex=0
