The Northern Rockies are experiencing one of the largest pine white (Neophasia menapia) eruptions in decades. Pine trees, mostly ponderosas, are filled with billions of white butterflies.

Here is a quick little sequence from our ramblings down along the creek this week. The sequence was shot using a Canon 7D and a newly constructed dolly that doubles as a solar panel support. Enjoy

The founder of Conservation Media, Jeremy Roberts just won a College EMMY from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences last week for his graduate thesis film Disturbance. He completed this film for Conservation Media as part of his graduate thesis in Science & Natural History filmmaking at Montana State University.

We just received word that we won two more Telly Awards, bringing the total to four!
These were Silver Tellies, the highest honor, for Cinematography and Nature/Environment category.

Disturbance, a film about about fire ecology and fire dependent species like the black-backed woodpecker, is a joint production of Conservation Media and Paintbrush Films. It has been honored at The International Wildlife Film Festival, the American Conservation Film Festival, and the Montana CINE International Film Festival. It also won a 2009 Telly Award.

So, here we are again—digital imaging devices provide first moving images of rare species, providing information on the mechanics of propulsion and helping share the novelty of this being with those who might otherwise never even know about his animal.

A underwater filming crew, working for BBC, captured the first film images of a very rare underwater giant, the smalleye stingray (Dasyatis microps) swimming off the coast of Mozambique. This underwater giant is the largest of all stingrays with a “wing span” of almost 7 ½ feet! Check out the video here.

Compared to its smallest relative, the Dwarf Whipray (Himantura walga), who measures only 24cm across, this giant is truly a behemoth. The footage can be seen in the BBC program “Andrea: Queen of the Mantas”, part of the Natural World series. The independent production company that captured this fantastic clip is Big Wave Productions.

I arrived yesterday after being distracted by the stunning fire in Yellowstone.  Huge wind gusts brought it from two square miles to about 13 square miles in 48 hours.  VERY exciting.  I filmed 300′ tall flames from across the lake.  Will post soon.  There is another two fires here in Grand Teton area.  Slept in truck and froze ass off last night.  Filmed a beautiful bull elk this a.m.  Great light, fall colors, and the Tetons as a backdrop.  Very cool.
